Great news, Book Benchers! The New York Public Library has officially extended its hours in ten branches. Some will even stay open as late as 11 P.M. on certain days. Good thing. According to Anne Coriston, the Library’s vice-president for public service, library traffic increased nine per cent last year, and circulation increased twelve per cent. It’s especially good news considering that public libraries in other cities have been forced to cut back on hours or even, like some branches in Philadelphia, shut down completely. I took a brief jaunt yesterday afternoon to the Mid-Manhattan branch to talk to New Yorkers who were enjoying the free coffee and donuts the Library was handing out in celebration. Here’s what they had to say:
