Innovative publisher builds a business on a new media format
SAN FRANCISCO, May 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Shebooks, a new
digital publisher of short e-books by and for women, launched subscriptions to
its growing library today. This week also marks the start of a Kickstarter
campaign to fund female authors called "Equal Writes."
Shebooks.net launched in December
2013 with a curated collection of e-books, each designed to be a one-
to-two hour read. Its library has since grown to 40 short works by top authors
and journalists, including best-sellers Caroline
Leavitt, Hope Edelman, GLAAD co-chair Jennifer Finney Boylan, Guardian columnist
Teresa Wiltz, cofounder of Ms. magazine
Suzanne Braun Levine, National Book Award finalist
Beth Kephart, and many more.
"By adding subscriptions and continuing to update our
library with two to four new books each week, we're making sure that women never
lack for a quality read on whatever digital device they're carrying," says
Shebooks President Peggy Northrop. E-books and
subscriptions are available for direct sale via Shebooks.net; individual titles
can also be purchased on Amazon, Barnes&Noble and other online
retailers.
Laura
Fraser, Shebooks Editorial Director, adds, "As an author, I've
seen the space for quality women's writing shrink and shrink. That's why we
started Shebooks, to give more women a platform to publish their work." Shebooks
offers authors a 50 percent share of revenue against sales.
Shebooks was cofounded by three publishing veterans.
Northrop is a two-time National Magazine Award-winning editor (Reader's
Digest, Sunset); Fraser a best-selling author (An Italian Affair) and
journalist. COO Rachel Greenfield is a former EVP
of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and a longtime publishing consultant. In 2013
the three won a grant from the McCormick
Foundation's New Media Women's Entrepreneur Fund.
Shebooks' "Equal Writes" Kickstarter campaign has a
goal of $50,000, which will fund advances to female
writers. Campaign rewards include subscriptions, "Equal Writes" T-shirts, author
visits to book clubs, and the opportunity to have a protagonist named after you
in a work of fiction.
"We are thrilled by the quality of the e-books that
we've published so far and are excited to discover new voices and publish many
more," says Northrop. "Kickstarter is the perfect vehicle for getting the word
out to a wide audience about this exciting new media form."
