2,899 school libraries across Turkey closed in 2014, report shows

According to a report by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), 2,899 libraries in state and private schools and exam preparations centers across Turkey were closed in 2014, bringing the total number of libraries in schools down to 27,948.

The report, released by TurkStat on Thursday, lists that by the end of 2014, Turkey had a national library, 1,121 public libraries, 559 university libraries and 27,948 libraries in high-school level educational institutions. While the national library only has 28,356 registered members, public libraries have 1,209,766 members and university libraries have 3,870,112 members, respectively, in a country whose population totals more than 77 million.

Figures in the TurkStat report reveal that the number of books in the national library increased 12.8 percent from 2013, totaling 1,629,496. The number of books in public libraries increased 17.9 percent, reaching 17,111,825, while university libraries increased their total book stock to 20,787,765 -- a 2.7 percent increase from 2013.

Despite the increase in the number of public and university libraries and the number of books available in them, the decrease in the number of libraries in high-school educational institutions from 2013 was as high as 9.4 percent. The number of books in these libraries decreased 10.9 percent, falling to 27,861,210.
